Sustainability Reports & Policies

Reports

Our annual Sustainability Report represents one of the many ways we communicate about our corporate-wide Sustainability Policy and Program. We have reported our environmental performance for a number of years, but more recently added our economic and social performance and a scorecard of key performance indicators. Our Scorecard communicates what we’ve been working on and what we believe is material to Amtrak. The Scorecard reflects year-over-year performance across a range of categories, including railroad safety, resource use and emissions, service to communities, and economic indicators such as our fleet refresh and replacement initiatives.

Environmental and Sustainability Management System

The Amtrak Environmental and Sustainability Management System, or ESMS, is the guiding framework for implementing and advancing our Environmental Policy and Sustainability Policy. Modeled on ISO 14001, the international standard for environmental management systems, the ESMS supports environmental compliance by establishing environmental procedures and training programs for employees across the corporation. Our multi-departmental ESMS steering committee and executive oversight committee meet regularly to establish annual and long-term goals and action plans to meet our policy commitments and continually improve our programs.

Over the last four years we leveraged executive level support to advance cross-departmental efforts, track the impacts from those projects, and report progress year over year.  These achievements are captured in the latest Sustainability Report. Amtrak’s Sustainability Policy has catalyzed several sustainability initiatives across the organization from fuel dispensing and monitoring systems, to earning LEED certification at Amtrak headquarters and to recycling leather seat covers from passenger train car refresh projects.
