Executive Vice President and Chief Safety Officer
Steve Predmore joined Amtrak in November 2019 as Executive Vice President and Chief Safety Officer, and he reports to the Chief Executive Officer. Steve is responsible for safety planning, training and performance across the Amtrak national network. In his role, Steve leads the company’s consolidated safety resources, a team that includes the System Safety, Compliance and Training, Environmental Compliance, Sustainability and Public Health groups.
Steve has almost 30 years of experience in protecting employees and customers in high-risk industries, including aviation, oil and gas, and contracted passenger services. Steve has applied his deep understanding of system safety, human factors and human performance to build and sustain high-performing safety cultures. He is a recognized leader in the implementation and operation of Safety Management Systems (SMS), which are proactive risk management systems that build on predictive safety management methods.
Steve most recently served as Vice President and Chief Safety Officer of the Bristow Group, the world’s largest provider of rotary and fixed wing aviation services for offshore transportation and search and rescue. During his five-year tenure, Steve successfully implemented the SMS model within several high-risk businesses, including offshore helicopter services.
Prior to Bristow, Steve was Senior Vice President of Safety for MV Transportation, the largest private U.S. provider of contracted passenger services, including paratransit/demand response, fixed-route municipal transit, corporate/airline shuttles and school bus operations. While at MV Transportation from 2012-13, Steve established methods and metrics to support continuous safety improvement in a culturally diverse operation that included 17,000 employees across 130 operating divisions.
Steve has almost two decades of experience in the aviation industry. From 2001 to 2012, he served as Vice President and Chief Safety Officer for JetBlue Airways. During his tenure, he led JetBlue to industry-leading safety performance for 12 years as the airline grew from 13 aircraft and 1,200 employees to 169 aircraft and 15,000 employees. Steve established a robust airline safety culture that achieved accident-free performance. He implemented a safety reporting system that scaled to capture more than 10,000 employee safety reports annually, and he successfully managed the safety risk associated with the airline’s rapid growth. JetBlue achieved the No. 1 ranking as the major U.S. airline with the lowest employee injury rate. Steve built his aviation expertise at Delta Air Lines from 1991-96 through a series of safety, quality and human factor roles.
Steve earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Drake University. He also holds a Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Texas-Austin.
