Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (DI&B) at Amtrak

Amtrak is a place where employees and customers have opportunities to thrive and be their best selves. We are proud of our diverse workforce and are committed to building a collaborative and connected community. As America’s Railroad, our organization aims to reflect the communities we serve.

We strive to foster an inclusive workplace where employees of all diverse dimensions, including but not limited to—race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, ability or veteran status—feel respected, expected, valued and heard.

Embracing diversity and respecting others is at the core of Amtrak’s values. Of course, there is still work to do, but we continue to invest in moving our organization and industry forward—together.

Our Inaugural CEO Diversity & Inclusion Summit

In the Spring of 2023, Stephen Gardner, Chief Executive Officer of Amtrak, hosted our inaugural CEO Diversity & Inclusion Summit at Union Station in Washington, DC. The event was a platform for HR leaders, D&I practitioners and executives to speak with peers and thought leaders. Attendees from across industries, including federal agencies, state departments of transportation, regional rail providers and hospitality joined the event. 

The CEO D&I Summit was partly about honoring our commitment to the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion pledge. However, it was also born out of the need to create a forum across transportation to talk about rebuilding diversity and inclusion in this baseline period.

Diversity in Action at Amtrak

Amtrak’s Diversity in Action Pledge is a larger commitment for the Amtrak community to join. This pledge is based off the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion commitment that Stephen Gardner signed last year. Our Executive Leadership Team (ELT) is kicking us off by committing to Diversity in Action at Amtrak. 

 

 

 

 

Amtrak’s Diversity in Action Pledge

At Amtrak, we are empowered to be leaders in our departments to support diversity, inclusion and belonging. As a leader, I commit to fulfilling the agreements within the Pledge and supporting our CEO, Stephen Gardner’s, commitment to diversity and inclusion.

  1. Support environments that welcome an open dialogue on complex and often difficult conversations around diversity and inclusion
  2. Learn by taking the Unconscious Bias training
  3. Stay actively engaged by joining an Employee Resource Group and utilizing the resources of the Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging team
  4. Engage leaders on how to contribute to diversity, inclusion and belonging at Amtrak
  5. Do my part to create an inclusive environment
