Making Travel Changes – Step by Step Guide
Some trains and routes have been temporarily suspended or are running on a reduced weekend schedule. You can use Amtrak.com to change some aspects of existing reservations that were made online, through the Amtrak App or in a station. Changes can only be made if there is an email address on file through Amtrak.com or modify reservations through the Amtrak App.

To change a reservation with no change fee, you may do so via Amtrak.com or the Amtrak app. Change fees are automatically waived. Amtrak is waiving cancellation fees through our agents at 1-800-USA-RAIL.
How to Change Your Reservation
New travel plans? No problem. Here's some essential information that you'll need if you have to change your ticket.
What you can do
Amtrak.com gives you the freedom to make quick and easy changes to existing reservations that were made online, through the Amtrak App or in a station anytime you want. Enjoy the flexibility of changing the dates and times of your departure and/or return trip or feel free to upgrade your seat or sleeping options. Changes can only be made if there is an email address on file through Amtrak.com or modify reservations through the Amtrak App. Once your changes are complete, your ticket barcode will automatically update, so there's no need to reprint your ticket. If you skip the paper route, you can simply show the PDF barcode to the conductor from your phone or tablet. It's that easy.
Changing reservations on Amtrak.com
If you booked online at Amtrak.com, you can easily change your reservation online. If you made your reservation while logged into your Amtrak.com account, simply log into your account to begin the modification process. If you made your reservation on Amtrak.com as a guest, you'll need your reservation number and the email address or telephone number used while making the reservation in order to make changes.
Changing reservations through our app
On the app home screen, you’ll see your upcoming travel listed, along with a form to retrieve other reservations. From here, there are two ways to change your trip. On the Home screen card that includes the barcode, tap 'Trip Tools,' then select 'Modify Reservation.'
Enter a reservation number and an email or phone number to retrieve your reservation details, then tap 'Change Trip' right below the barcode.
If you don't see the change button, your reservation may not be changed through the app.
Amtrak doesn't charge a ticket change fee, but other fees may apply. Policies regarding ticket changes vary; limitations and exclusions apply.
How to Cancel Your Reservation
Canceling reservations purchased online
You can easily cancel your reservation online if you booked it at Amtrak.com. If you made your reservation while logged into your Amtrak.com account, simply log into your account and click the 'My Account' link at the top of any page. The 'View/Edit' button will take you to your reservations where you can click the 'Cancel Trip' button and follow the steps for cancellation.
If you purchased your tickets online as a guest, you may cancel your reservation online by clicking 'Modify Trip' at the top of any page. Enter your reservation number and email address or telephone number used when you made your reservation and click 'Find Trip.' Then, click the 'Cancel Trip' button and follow the steps for cancellation.
Canceling reservations purchased elsewhere
If you paid for your one-way, round-trip or multi-ride reservations with a credit card or an eVoucher, you can also cancel it on Amtrak.com, even if you made your reservations on the phone, at a Quik-Trak kiosk or with a station agent.
Just click the 'Modify Trip' link at the top of any page. Enter your reservation number and email address or telephone number used when you made your reservation and click 'Find Trip.' Then, click the 'Cancel Trip' button and follow the steps for cancellation.
Cancellation Fees and Restrictions
Most Amtrak tickets are refundable and can be canceled and refunded online. A cancellation fee may apply depending on the type of fare you purchased and how close to your departure date you cancel. Refunds for canceled reservations will be applied to the original form of payment or an eVoucher. Cancellation fees may apply and not all tickets are eligible for cancellation. How to make a new reservation
Enter your departure and arrival cities and travel dates in the Fare Finder tool on the Home Page or click the 'Book Now' button in the site header. Add any passenger discounts that you qualify for and the number of travelers and click 'Find Trains'. You can book up to 8 passengers per reservation and reserve your tickets up to 11 months in advance. Available trains will be shown on the next page. When you find a train that meets your travel needs, click 'Add to Cart' above that train to continue your reservation.
