America’s Thanksgiving Parade presented by Art Van

Thousands of parade-goers line up on Woodward Avenue before the sun comes up, in unpredictable weather, for colorfully crafted floats, spirited marching bands, celebrity appearances and high-flying, gigantic character balloons you can see coming from a mile away. The day’s festivities begin with the Turkey Trot, a series of fun races a mile, 5K and 10K long, where runners suit up in nearly every costume you could imagine, including, of course, turkey getups. Recognized as one of the best Thanksgiving parades in the country by U.S. News & World Report Travel, America's Thanksgiving Parade presented by Art Van is celebrating its 91st anniversary. The iconic parade will feature celebrities, new floats designed and built by The Parade Company, larger-than-life balloons, marching bands and specialty groups like the Distinguished Clown Corps and Big Head Corps. The race takes place along downtown's historic Woodward Avenue. The three-mile long parade begins at Kirby Street and Woodward Avenue, adjacent to the Detroit Institute for Arts and ends at Congress Street south of Campus Martius Park.

Each November, the merchants of Downtown Holland host the annual Holiday Open House, a highly anticipated holiday tradition for both visitors and local residents alike. Stroll the decorated streets filled with holiday carolers, sample a roasted chestnut and shop the day away at stores, boutiques and galleries all featuring unique gift options you won’t find anywhere else. Take a picture with Santa or visit his reindeer at the petting corral. Grab a cup of hot cocoa at a coffee shop and enjoy a mouth-watering meal at a restaurant or pub. The Holiday Open House concludes at 8 pm with a tree lighting ceremony and a Christmas carol sing-a-long at the corner of 8th Street and Central Avenue. Attendees will be invited to join our sponsor representatives, City officials and of course, Santa Claus himself, as the official Downtown Holland Christmas tree is illuminated with thousands of sparkling lights.

During the annual Parade of Lights, Santa will arrive in Downtown Holland (near 8th & Columbia) escorted by reindeer, bands, floats, trucks, family and friends… all decked out in thousands of sparkling holiday lights. More than 70 entries will illuminate the streets of Downtown Holland during this highly anticipated holiday event. At the end of the Parade, (8th Street Market Place, 150 West 8th Street) Santa and his reindeer will take the time to greet his fans — young and old alike.

The Community Tree Lighting ceremony always takes place on the first Friday of December; this year, December 7. The St. Joseph High School Choir begins Christmas carols near the tree located at the corner of Broad and Lake Boulevard at 6 pm, with the ceremony taking place at 6:30 pm. Over 1 million lights come alive along Lake Bluff Park as it is transformed into a winter wonderland from December 7 through Valentine’s Day. Grab your sweetheart or entire family and take a stroll through the Park under arches of sparkling lights from December 7 - February 15th. Fun for the entire family.
