Auto Train Ticketless Check-In
Auto Train customers can check in ticket-free if not already issued paper value tickets. However, if you already received a paper value ticket for your trip, you still need it for check-in. Keep it safe.
From reservation and purchase, to check-in, and planning your return trip, Amtrak has made riding the Auto Train as easy as 1, 2, 3.
1. Reservation & Purchase
You have four ways to make a reservation for the Auto Train.
- Make your reservation online at the Auto Train booking page and print out your reservation confirmation from the Amtrak web site or your confirmation e-mail.
- Call 1-877-SKIP-I-95, and receive a printable reservation confirmation e-mail.
- Go to an Auto Train Station (Sanford, FL or Lorton, VA) to make your reservation. You can also go to a non-AutoTrain station and receive a paper value ticket.
- Make a reservation through an independent travel agent and receive a paper value ticket.
2. Easy Check-in
Depending on what you have at hand from your reservation, your check-in process varies.
- If you have a reservation confirmation printout, just provide the ticket agent with the reservation confirmation document and government-issued ID to check in.
- If you have a paper value ticket, provide the ticket and government-issued ID.
With or without a paper value ticket, you can easily make travel changes at the ticket counter.
3. Carefree Return Trip
If you come without a paper value ticket, you leave without it as well. Just arrive at the Auto Train station and check in with your reservation confirmation document and government-issued ID.
For the first part of your round-trip, if you use a paper value ticket to check in, you are also required to check in with your paper value ticket for your return trip.
Remember: Paper value tickets have value so make sure you keep them safe.
How will I know if I can use ticketless check-in?
If you reserve and pay for your trip in advance (online at Amtrak.com or by calling 1-877-SKIP-I-95) you will not need a traditional paper ticket for your trip. You can check in at an Auto Train station ticket counter by presenting your reservation confirmation (printed from the Amtrak web site or your confirmation e-mail) and government-issued ID.
Will I ever need a paper ticket?
If you have already been issued paper tickets, then you need to present them at check-in. Remember to keep your paper tickets safe. They have value. A paper ticket will also be required under certain circumstances. For example, if…
- Having made a reservation with the Contact Center, you are paying for your trip at an Auto Train station ticket counter prior to check-in.
- You make a change to your reservation that increases the fare and you are paying the additional amount at the ticket counter.
- Your reservation includes travel on routes other than Auto Train.
- You have paid for your trip using Amtrak Guest Rewards points (See 'What if' section for details.)
- Your trip was booked and paid for through a travel agency or corporate travel offices. (See 'What if' section for details.)
In such instances, our current technology will produce paper tickets, including those for your return trip if there is one. Please safeguard return tickets as they have value.
Do I have to do anything differently at the Auto Train station?
No. The Auto Train staff will know if you’ve paid in advance for your trip. After checking in your car, go to the ticket counter. An Auto Train station agent will give you your seat or room assignment and will set up your dinner reservation.
I do not have a printed reservation confirmation document.
We prefer that you have a reservation confirmation document printed from the Amtrak web site or your confirmation e-mail because it enables the Auto Train staff to serve you better. However, you can still check in without one. Give your reservation number or your name and a government-issued ID to a ticket agent.
I have not paid in advance.
If you have not yet paid, present your vehicle at the greeter’s booth, where you will be told to do the following:
- Leave your vehicle where directed and go to the ticket counter to pay and check in.
- Return to your vehicle and release it to Auto Train staff, who will load it onto the train.
Paying at the ticket office will produce paper tickets, including those for your return trip if there is one. Be certain not to lose or forget them, because they have value and you will need them to check in when you return.
I am traveling round-trip and do not have paper tickets. Will I receive my return tickets when I check in the first time?
No. You will check in for your departure without paper tickets, and the record of your return trip will be stored electronically until you check in on your return trip date - also without paper tickets. Nothing to lose or forget.
I have paper tickets already. Do I still need them?
Yes. You will need your tickets in order to check in. Do not lose or forget these paper tickets, because they have value. Please keep them safe.
I had paper tickets but I left them behind (or lost them). What do I do?
Paper tickets have value. You will need to repurchase those tickets at the ticket counter. If you recover the original paper tickets, you can submit them and the receipts from the repurchased tickets for a refund of the original tickets. If they have been lost entirely, Amtrak’s lost ticket policy applies, and you need to call 1-877-SKIP-I-95 as soon as possible.
I want my paper tickets in advance to prove that I have a reservation and have paid for it. How else can I have assurance that I have a paid reservation?
Your printed reservation confirmation (from the Amtrak web site or your confirmation e-mail) is assurance that you have a reservation. If you have paid for your trip, that will be shown on that page also. Because paper tickets have value, we strongly recommend that you do not obtain them in advance. If you lose or forget them, you will have to repurchase tickets. With ticketless check-in, you have nothing to lose or forget.
I am an Amtrak Guest Rewards member, and I have redeemed my points for my trip on Auto Train. Will I need to bring paper tickets to check in?
You will not need to bring paper tickets with you, but they will be issued to you when you check in. If you have a return trip, the paper tickets will be issued for that future trip also. Be certain not to lose or forget them, because they have value and you will need them to check in when you return. Your paper tickets will reflect your Amtrak Guest Rewards redemption.
I booked at a travel agency or corporate travel office. What do I do?
If you booked and paid at a travel agency or corporate travel office, and
- received paper tickets, you must present those tickets in order to check in.
- did not receive paper tickets, you may still check in at the ticket counter. Please bring any printed confirmation document you may have.
