Carry-On Bike Service on Northeast Trains

Available on Many Trains in the Northeast

Don't let your bike sit at home while you have all the fun — take it with you on your next train trip and explore your destination car-free. It's easy with carry-on bicycle service available on many trains in the Northeast.

Reservations Required

Advance reservations are required for carry-on bicycle service onboard Northeast services. A bicycle fee of $20 applies for most routes ($10 if you're traveling between New Haven-Springfield or within the State of Vermont.) Make a reservation for your bike at the same time you're booking the rest of your travel here at Amtrak.com, via the Amtrak app, at a Amtrak kiosk, by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL or by visiting any Amtrak ticket office. You must have a travel document (eTicket) for your bike.

Eligible Bikes

Only standard size bikes will be permitted. Each passenger may bring one bicycle. The front wheel, large seat/saddle bags, handlebar bags, baskets or panniers must be removed from the bike before securing it to the bike rack. These items can be stored as carry-on baggage. Electric bikes and folding scooters are also accepted when certain requirements are met.

Arrive Early

You must arrive 30 minutes prior to your train's departure to allow sufficient time to maneuver your bicycle through the station and be in position to board. Train cars marked with a "Bike Friendly" sticker can accommodate bicycles. A conductor may also direct you to the appropriate train car.

Loading Bicycles

You must be physically capable of lifting your bicycle up to shoulder height. Loading instructions will be available in the bike rack area and Amtrak crew members will be available to assist if necessary. Bicycles are stored in designated bike racks/areas inside Coach passenger cars.

Front Wheel Must Be Removed

After boarding, you will be required to remove the front wheel of your bicycle before hanging it by the back wheel and securing it using the provided strap. Ensure that you are familiar with the process for removing your front wheel and bring any necessary tools with you.
