Journey with WiFi

To ensure you stay connected while traveling, we offer free basic WiFi service in select trains and stations throughout the country. Stay productive, or simply sit back and have some fun while en route to your destination.

To ensure there is enough bandwidth for all of our onboard users, this free amenity supports general web browsing activities only. Our WiFi does not support high-bandwidth actions such as streaming music, streaming video or downloading large files. You can enjoy Amtrak WiFi on the following trains and in some stations:

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I connect to the Amtrak WiFi Network?

If your device does not automatically connect to the network, follow these steps:
Step 1: Look in your list of available wireless networks for Amtrak_WiFi*
Step 2
: Select the network name.
Step 3: Open or refresh your browser; you should see the Amtrak WiFi welcome screen at this point.
Step 4: Agree to the terms of use and you will be taken to the Amtrak WiFi landing page. You are now connected to the Internet.

* On Capitol Corridor and San Joaquins trains, look for "YourTrainWiFi" and click agree from the welcome screen.

What kind of speed can I expect?

Our onboard WiFi network relies on bandwidth provided by cellular carriers who have towers along our routes. The bandwidth available from these towers is limited and our speed may not match what you are used to receiving from stationary WiFi networks such as your home or office. Engaging in web activities that use large amounts of bandwidth will negatively affect the online experience of other passengers. When using our network, keep this in mind and be respectful of your fellow passengers.

Are there any restrictions?

The explosion of the Internet and the use of WiFi have created incredible demands for connectivity. To maximize the amount of onboard bandwidth available to all passengers, access to streaming media and large files sizes will be limited. To prepare for this restriction, we recommend passengers download any necessary large files prior to boarding the train. In addition, this network restricts access to web sites with objectionable content. If you think a web site has been incorrectly blocked, or have general comments about the service, contact us.

Can I use VPN?

Yes. Amtrak WiFi onboard all trains allows VPN traffic.

If I have trouble connecting, who can I contact?

Amtrak WiFi does not offer technical support for passengers experiencing difficulty with the network. If you feel there has been a network outage, please report this to the train conductor. While our conductors are unable to troubleshoot your connectivity issues, they can report the possibility of an onboard outage to an offsite monitoring service.

How secure is your network?

Amtrak WiFi is a public WiFi network which utilizes wireless technologies and does not require any secure pass code or login. Similar to networks found at coffee shops and public libraries, it is not inherently secure and communications can be intercepted. Passengers are solely responsible for providing security measures that are suited for their intended use, including protecting their data and equipment from viruses, spyware and other harmful components. Passengers are also solely responsible for any security breach or accidental disclosure of their personal information in their use of Amtrak WiFi.

Additional WiFi Networks

Additional WiFi networks that are not operated by Amtrak may be available to you in various stations throughout your journey. We ask that while in these locations you refer to information provided by the operating carrier on how to connect, usage restrictions and terms of use.
