Planning to attend the 2024 USGA U.S Open this year? Skip the hassles of traffic and parking, take Amtrak to the championship at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club. Ride the Carolinian or Piedmont to Raleigh Union Station and transfer onto Amtrak’s special “Open Express” train. 

This Open Express will run daily between Raleigh Union Station and the Pinehurst Clubhouse near the Pinehurst No. 2 golf course from June 13 - 16, when championship play is scheduled for the U.S. Open. 

Passengers will access the championship rounds through Gate 10 adjacent to the Pinehurst Clubhouse, which is just a short walk from the Pinehurst No. 2 course.

Open Express Details

  • Daily round-trip service between June 13-16.
  • Service to the Pinehurst Clubhouse near the Pinehurst No. 2 golf course of the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club.
  • Food and beverages will be available to purchase onboard.
  • The morning train will depart Raleigh Union Station at 7 a.m., Cary at 7:15 a.m. and arrive in Pinehurst at approximately 9:11 a.m.
  • The evening train will depart from the Pinehurst Clubhouse at 6:35 p.m. and arrive in Cary at about 8:31 p.m. and Raleigh Union Station at 8:43pm. 
  • Spacious Coach class seating is available each way. 

Purchasing Tickets

  • When purchasing your ticket(s) online, select "Pinehurst" or "PIH" for your destination and return trip.
  • All train tickets are available on a first come first serve basis and seating is limited.

  • The Open Express offers a total of 4 roundtrips in 2024 — with daily service between Raleigh Union Station, Cary Station and the Pinehurst Clubhouse near the Pinehurst No. 2 Golf Course beginning Thursday, June 13 and ending Sunday June 16, when championship play is scheduled for the U.S. Open.

    The train departs Raleigh (RGH) at 7:00 am, Cary (CRY) at 7:15am and arrives at Pinehurst (PIH) at 9:11am. The return trip departs the Pinehurst Clubhouse
    (PIH) at 6:35pm, Cary at 8:31pm and arrives at Raleigh at approximately 8:43pm.

    Passengers will access the championship rounds through Gate 10 adjacent to the Pinehurst Clubhouse, which is just a short walk from the Pinehurst No. 2 Golf Course.

  • Visit the fare finder on this page or on the Amtrak app. Then, select either a one-way or roundtrip ticket. Next, select your origin and destination {RGH, CYN to Pinehurst (PIH)}. Finally, select your desired travel date(s). Fares and options to book will be available on the next screen.

  • Customers in small groups of up to eight can purchase Open Express tickets at the fare finder on this page and the Amtrak app. Customers in groups of 9 - 14 can call 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) to make a reservation. Groups of 15 or more — including requests for exclusive car occupancy — should make a group travel request and an Amtrak representative will contact you.   • Open Express customers can bring two carry-on items and one personal item. There will be no golf club storage available aboard the train.

    Alcoholic beverages cannot be brought onboard the Open Express. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks can be purchased in the Café car.

  • During your trip, be sure to visit the Café car — offering hot and cold food and beverages for purchase. 

  • We recommend arriving at the station at least 30 minutes prior to departure. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

  • No. Tickets to the U.S. Open are not included in the price of your train ticket.

  • Yes, the Raleigh (RGH) and Cary (CYN) are accessible for passengers with disabilities. The added Open Express stop at Pinehurst (PIH) will have a wheelchair lift. Accessible
    seating is available on trains, but is limited, so accessible seating reservations are strongly encouraged, especially with the expected higher volume of travelers for the event.
