Membership Discount ID Number FAQs

Amtrak offers discounts on most itineraries to cardholders of the following Amtrak partner organizations:

  • AAA (American Automobile Association)
  • NARP (National Association of Railroad Passengers)
  • Veterans Advantage

Discounts are not available for some itineraries, and some membership discounts cannot be combined with promotion codes.

How do I get a discount?

In most cases, to receive a membership discount you must provide a valid membership number for each passenger when you book your reservation. Discounts are applied to each passenger (and not to each reservation).

On the 'Passenger Discounts/Promotion Code' step of the reservation booking process, you are given the opportunity to select from a number of passenger discount options for adult and child passengers for whom you have booked travel. (Passenger discounts are not available for infants.)

If you select the 'AAA', 'NARP' or 'Veterans Advantage' option (or if you select the 'AAA Child (Ages 2-15)' option for child passengers), you must enter the membership discount number associated with that selection during 'Passenger Info' step of the reservation booking process.

You can specify a membership discount type and provide your membership discount number in your User Profile. This information will be pre-populated on the 'Passenger Info' step each time you make a reservation, and you will not have to enter it again. You are always free to change this information in your User Profile.

How much is each discount?

Typically, the discount is 10 to 15 percent of the rail fare.

Can I combine the discounts offered by two membership organizations?

You can use up to one passenger discount for each passenger. And you can use different passenger discounts for different passengers in your party. For instance, you may apply a AAA discount for yourself, a senior discount for your father, and a NARP discount for your daughter.

You may not, however, apply more than one discount to a single passenger.

Can I combine a passenger discount with a promotion code?

Usually, no. But from time to time, we offer promotions that may be combined with passenger discounts.

The terms and conditions of each promotion will usually indicate whether the promotion may be combined with passenger discounts. Also, when you book your trip online, our reservation booking system will let you know whether a promotion may be combined with a passenger discount.

How do I find my membership ID number?

Typically, your membership ID number is printed on your membership card. You may contact the membership organization directly for more help.

I can't find my discount ID number. Can I present my card after I purchase my ticket, and still receive a discount?

Sorry, no. Amtrak calculates your fare, in part, on the basis of the passenger type you select and the membership ID number you supply. We cannot apply this information after you make the purchase without canceling your reservation— and if we cancel your reservation, cancellation charges may apply.

Is there an advanced booking requirement?

Yes. To be able to apply these discounts, you must book your tickets (including tickets for travel on unreserved trains) at least three days in advance of travel.

This restriction applies also to any changes in your intinerary. If you make any change to your itinerary, you must re-qualify for any membership discount used. This means that, to be eligible to receive an applicable membership discount, any change to your itinerary must be made at least three days in advance of travel.
