How does the hiring process work?

In order to be considered for any type of position, you must fill out the online application. Resumes that are mailed, e-mailed or hand-delivered to Amtrak or an Amtrak employee will not be considered.

Once you have submitted an online application, our employment team will review it and notify you via e-mail if you have been selected to participate in the next step of the recruiting process. This may include taking the Amtrak Culture Fit and other pre-qualification assessments that may be required for the position to which you are applying.

What are the basic requirements for becoming an employee at Amtrak other than the job related qualifications listed in the posting?

You must be willing to:

What is the Culture Fit Assessment?

The Culture Fit Assessment is a new tool that Amtrak uses to help identify the most qualified candidates. It evaluates how likely a job candidate will perform certain behaviors on the job that support our Amtrak culture. The untimed assessment includes 104 multiple choice questions and takes about an hour to complete.

How is the Culture Fit Assessment Administered?

The Culture Fit Assessment is taken online and can be completed from any computer or mobile device with an internet connection. Once a candidate submits their application the Recruiting Management System (RMS) will send them a confirmation of application submission email that will include information about how to access and complete the Culture Fit Assessment. The email will contain a hyperlink that will take the candidate to the testing website where they will register and complete the assessment.

Can a person study or prepare for the Culture Fit Assessment?

No. Because the Culture Fit Assessment asks about a person's experiences and personality (for example, personal preferences, how they act in different situations, views, opinions), it's not possible to prepare or study.

How do I apply for a job at Amtrak?

How do I apply for a job with the Amtrak Police Department?

The Amtrak Police Department (APD) is a national police force committed to protecting the passengers, employees, and patrons of Amtrak. Our more than 500 sworn and civilian personnel at more than 30 locations in 46 states conduct a range of behind-the-scenes and front line security measures to ensure the safety and security of Amtrak employees, passengers, and infrastructure.

Are Amtrak Police Officers commissioned officers?

Amtrak Police Department (APD) Officers have the same police authority as a local or state law enforcement officer within their jurisdiction. APD Officers investigate various types of crimes that occur within and around stations, trains and right-of-ways.

APD Officers are required to be commissioned in either the state of legal residence or state of primary employment and are authorized by Federal Statute to enforce laws and conduct investigations nationwide, related to crimes occurring on Amtrak property.

Once you have established a Candidate Profile in our system, you will be able to access your profile at any time by logging into our Career Center. Please remember your user name and password. What can I expect after I apply for a job?

You'll receive notice that we have received your application. If you do not receive a confirmation email, your resume was not received. Our recruiters review every resume and will contact the best-qualified candidates directly.

What happens to my profile after it's been submitted?

Once submitted, your resume enters our candidate tracking system. This tool provides our recruiters with a centralized candidate database and serves as the first stop for our recruiters, who are trying to identify candidates for specific job openings.
