I have been taking the Silver Star between Columbia and Rocky Mount for a few years now to travel to college. This time, however, was the first time I took the train south of Columbia to my hometown of Ft. Myers, Florida, to see my dad's family.
I hopped on the 1:45 am train leaving Columbia with my friend who lived in Savannah and slept most of the way (including through the entire state of Georgia). When I woke up, I saw palm trees everywhere.
When the train stopped in Tampa, I exited and waited to board a very nice charter bus that would take the rest of us to various cities. Finally, the bus stopped in Ft. Myers, my birthplace and where I'd spent the first nine years of my life.
During my stay, I was able to see my dad, uncle, two aunts and my grandfather for the first time since I'd moved away. Thank you Amtrak, for bringing me to the rest of my family.
