Raleigh, North Carolina
I have a story about a great one day trip that you can make in North Carolina. I boarded in Raleigh and two hours later was in Salisbury.
The Salisbury Amtrak station, a former Southern Railway depot, was renovated with local and state funds and is a sight worth seeing in itself. Salisbury's advantage over many other cities is that the Amtrak station is only two blocks from one of the two main streets, where shopping and dining opportunities abound.
For history buffs, there is an walking tour of historic properties, and the North Carolina Transportation Museum is only a short city bus ride away in neighboring Spencer. Also, there is free wireless internet in the downtown area for those who need to stay connected.
There is plenty to do in Salisbury during the nine hours between arriving and getting on the return train. It just goes to prove that you don't have to drive your car to have fun.
