Mount Shasta, California
I booked a round trip from Chicago to the San Francisco Ferry building to visit my son in San Francisco. I couldn't book the Coast Starlight both ways from Mount Shasta because the return trip would not have gotten me home in time for work.
The Coast Starlight arrived on time and the coach seat was clean and comfy. I enjoyed a nice breakfast in the Dinner Car while watching the sun rise over the wet fields of the Sacramento Valley. The redecorated station in Emeryville was a nice surprise, that just added to the good service there.
On my return trip, I rode the Capitol Corridor Train 352 to Sacramento and the Thruway 3713 to Chicago. A very nice trip, on time and fast. I've driven to San Francisco hundreds of trips and taking the combination of trains and thruway connections is sweet.
My next trip will be from Mount Shasta/Dunsmuir to Salt Lake City via San Francisco.
