While I normally traveled Amtrak on the Northeast Corridor mainly between New Jersey and Washington, DC; I decided to take the train to see my girlfriend who was attending Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. There were a few trains to take, but I opted to take a Regional train to Washington, DC, then the Capitol Limited from DC, to the Three Rivers city of Pittsburgh. My first of descending the escalator and seeing the double-decker gleaming Superliner cars, I became extremely excited. I opted for a standard Bedroom to experience what a sleeping car was like. Needless to say, I was hooked. It was everything I could imagine and more. From a nice cozy compartment to an elegant Dining Car, followed by the Sightseer Lounge.
As we continued westward from DC, passing through beautiful Harpers Ferry and witnessing a spectacular sunset, through Cumberland where I had an excellent pasta dinner (my first dinner ever by train), and little nap back in my Roomette, and upon arrival into Pittsburgh, I was so excited I did not want to get off. As I walked down the platform in Pittsburgh, there was my girlfriend waiting and excited to see me; it was reminscent of movies with such stars as Cary Grant and Burt Lancaster. This train has everything, bridges, mountains, valleys, tunnels, beautiful scenery, good food, and exceptional crew, big cities, small towns, I could go on and on. Needless to say, after that trip, and seven years later, I now travel about 95% by Amtrak, I now have 30+ trips taken on the Capitol Limited to and from Chicago, plus many other Amtrak trains. If you have the time; it is an excellent way to travel.
Thank you Amtrak, for this, and many other wonderful memories you have given and will continue to give me.
