I had my 40th birthday last February and my partner asked me what I wanted for my birthday. I said I wanted to take the Empire Builder out to Whitefish, Montana/Glacier National Park rather than a new kitchen.
So, I got my wish and couldn't have asked for a better gift. I was proud to be celebrating my 40th along with Amtrak's 40th.
We booked our trip for July, and sadly a couple of weeks before our trip the flooding in Minot temporarily shut down the Empire Builder. We called Amtrak - they were very friendly and were able to rebook our trip the next month.
August 22 came fast. I was really excited for the trip on the Empire Builder out west. My last trip was in 1996 with my parents. This was my partner's first long distance trip, and we booked a Roomette. Our Sleeping Car Attendant, Courtney, filled our needs as needed.
Having the Roomette was the best thing I've done. I was able to relax in a quiet room along with my partner. We just sat back and watched the country go rolling by as the car was rocking back and forth to a point where we were ready to fall asleep.
The wine and cheese tasting was enjoyable, and at the end I won a bottle of wine from the trivia game.
We met an older couple who was from England - it was wonderful to chat with them and share our culture here in the States at lunch, and again at dinner.
The steak dinner was super. I couldn't ask for a better steak, and it melted in my mouth. I have never had and may never have a steak this good.
After five days at the Whitefish area, it was time to come back home. We boarded the Sleeper Car again, and again experienced wonderful service by all the staff. After another wonderful dinner that evening, we enjoyed a nice small bottle of champagne to celebrate our ring exchange.
When we left our room to get ready for the evening, Prince had our bed down for the evening, and had a mint on the pillow waiting for us when we returned. What a nice way to end the wonderful day on the Empire Builder.
