<![CDATA[Amtrak Service Alerts & Passenger Service Notices - West ]]> Weblog Editor 2.0 <![CDATA[Empire Builder: Significant Delays Possible on Trains 7/27/807 and Trains 8/28/808]]> Effective through September 30, 2014

Passengers traveling aboard Empire Builder trains can encounter significant delays due to very high volumes of freight train traffic along the route. During the two-week period ending July 19, 2014, delays averaged between three and five hours. While delays to the Empire Builder have primarily been occurring west of St. Paul, MN, passengers should anticipate delays in both directions.

Passengers are strongly urged to sign-up for delay notifications when booking their travel and to check the status of their train on Amtrak.com, our free mobile apps or at 800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) for the most up-to-date departure and arrival times.

BNSF Railway Company owns and maintains the tracks and dispatches the trains west of St. Paul. BNSF is making capacity improvements, which are expected to reduce delays to Amtrak trains and to freight trains. However, many of these projects will not be complete until late 2014.

Bus Service Provided to and from Grand Forks, Devils Lake and Rugby

As part of this construction in North Dakota, BNSF has asked Amtrak to use an alternate route in one or both directions, resulting in the Empire Builder missing Amtrak stations in Grand Forks, Devils Lake and Rugby. Passengers will be provided chartered bus service to and from these stations. This detour is planned to conclude by October 1, 2014, and is expected to shorten the time BNSF needs to recover Empire Builder reliability.

Amtrak will continue to work with BNSF Railway and other carriers on this route to restore dependable Empire Builder service. Amtrak will also regularly update this Passenger Service Notice.

<![CDATA[Student Discount Changes from 15 Percent to 10 Percent]]> Effective April 2, 2014

Changes will be made to the Student Advantage (SA) and International Student Identity Card (ISIC) discount membership programs. The rail fare discount for SA and ISIC cardholders will change from 15 percent to 10 percent. This change matches the membership discount for American Automobile Association (AAA) and National Association of Railroad Passengers (NARP), which is already 10 percent.

The requirement to book at least three days before travel remains in effect. Reservations made April 1, 2014, or earlier will be priced at the 15 percent discount level. However, if the passenger makes changes to such reservations on April 2 or after, the reservation will then be priced at the 10 percent discount level. The student discount for Amtrak Express Shipments will also change from 15 percent to 10 percent.

Effective July 7, 2014, the SA and ISIC discounts may only be booked online at Amtrak.com and through mobile apps. At that time, the SA and ISIC discounts will no longer be available to book by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL or at an Amtrak ticket office.

Thank you for traveling with Amtrak. We appreciate your patronage. For more information on passenger discounts, visit Amtrak.com or call 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245).
