Central Vermont

Encircled by mountains, surrounded by flowing water, Rutland is Vermont.

Encircled by mountains, surrounded by flowing lakes and streams, Rutland is quintessential Vermont. The moment you step off the train, right in the center of historic Downtown, you're within minutes of the full range of Vermont pleasures.

The quaint villages with white picket fences and covered bridges, the fish that are always biting, antique treasures hidden away in barns, and the views around every bend in the road, these are what visitors have come to expect of Vermont.

In winter its Killington Ski Resort, Pico Mountain, and Okemo Mountain that draw the crowds. Vermont's highest lift-serviced peak, Killington provides world class downhill skiing and snowboarding on the most exciting terrain in east North America. Pico Mountain, just 15 minutes from the train station in Rutland, is a favorite family destination. In summer and fall, take in panoramic views of five states and Canada from atop Killington Peak, or enjoy the water slides, and mountain biking at the Adventure Center.

A fishing license, a pole and a bucket of worms is all it takes to angle for the wild brook trout that lurk in almost every stream. One of the most peaceful and beautiful fishing sites is Chittenden Reservoir, 674 acres nestled in the forests of the Green Mountains.

For those craving more "civilized" pursuits, there are 18 golf courses within an hour's drive of Rutland. And the city offers fine dining and stimulating nightlife at over 100 restaurants and nightspots, many convenient to the renowned Paramount Theatre.

Favorite attractions for visitors include the New England Maple Museum, in nearby Pittsford, where all things maple — starting with the Native American discovery of making a sweet syrup from maple sap — are explored. The Norman Rockwell Museum, Wilson Castle, Vermont Marble Exhibit, and the Chaffee Center for the Visual Arts are all close at hand, offering entertainment and education. And a host of summer music festivals, theater, arts and crafts, vie for attention with all the natural wonders.
