While every Amtrak adventure gives you a piece of the American experience, the Capitol Limited travels from the very heart of our democracy, through scenes of some of our country's most significant history. In fact, the train follows, the exact same route of the famed Baltimore and Ohio Railroad that as established in 1840.
The trip begins in the nation's capital, Washington, DC. As you leave the beautifully restored Union Station, the train then slips back in time as it travels through historic towns, including the site of a pivotal event leading up to the Civil War-John Brown's 1859 raid at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, where the Shenandoah meets the Potomac. The serene, untouched beauty of today's Potomac River Valley seems at odds with the massive battles that once occurred on the endless green fields along the way.
Yet history is only one of the interesting facets of this unique ride. Between Washington, DC, and Pittsburgh, the Capitol Limited goes through 13 tunnels, including the Point of Rocks Tunnel that starts the climb into the Appalachians. As you are lifted high along the ridges of this range, the Capitol Limited affords you spectacular views of the Allegheny Mountains, which jut heroically above the valleys in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. At nightfall, the train arrives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where the dramatic skyline reflects off the Ohio, Monogahela and Allegheny Rivers, as you reflect on this unforgettable journey.
