Getting Oriented at the Station

Departure Times, Connections, and Late Trains
Get to the Station Early

We recommend that you arrive at the station at least 30 minutes before your train is scheduled to depart.

Auto Train passengers should arrive at the station at least two hours prior to departure. Learn more about Auto Train Boarding and Vehicle Requirements.

If you need help with your baggage, tickets or any other services, or if you are departing from a large or busy station, we recommend you arrive at the station even earlier than stated above. You should expect and plan for long lines at busy stations.

Allow more time, also, if you are planning to bring your bike aboard, or have other special needs.

Connecting Trains

Amtrak does not normally guarantee connections of less than 60 minutes (90 minutes between arriving long-distance trains and local trains in the Northeast Corridor). Please call Amtrak 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) or your travel agent if your planned itinerary includes a shorter connection. A guaranteed connection does not ensure that such a connection will always be made. In the case of a missed guaranteed connection, Amtrak will provide alternate transportation on Amtrak, another carrier, or overnight hotel accommodations, at Amtrak's discretion.

Late Trains

Unfortunately, the train you're waiting to board may arrive at your station behind schedule. In such cases, the amount of time the train remains in the station may be less than what is shown in the timetable. Be aware of such contingencies and plan accordingly.

Schedules May Change

Since schedules are subject to change, you should reconfirm your departure times the day before travel, particularly if you purchased tickets long in advance.

Border Crossing

Be aware that you may experience delays at border crossings. Such delays are usually due to US and/or Canadian customs and immigration procedures, and are beyond Amtrak's control. Learn more about border crossing.

Baggage Assistance

Amtrak offers free Red Cap Service to help you with your bags at many of our major stations. We recommend that you accept assistance only from a uniformed Red Cap Agent, and that you ask for a claim check for each bag handled.

Handcarts are also available for your use at many stations.

Purchasing Tickets at the Station

We recommend that you make reservations and purchase tickets well in advance of travel. At some staffed stations, you can purchase tickets at the station — either at the ticket counter or at a Quik-Trak self-service ticketing kiosk.
