Guide to Fares
About Fares
-
Usually, you should make your reservations early to get the best fares.
-
Fares are generally higher during holidays and peak travel periods.
-
We allow you to book tickets up to 11 months in advance.
- When traveling in the Northeast, fares typically vary based on the time of day and on the day of travel.
How We Determine Fares
The total fare you pay is made up of your rail fare, plus any applicable accommodation charges.
-
Rail Fare: We charge each passenger a rail fare, whether you are traveling in Coach Class, Business class or have reserved a sleeping accommodation.
-
Charge for Business Class and Sleeping Accommodations: We charge a separate amount for accommodations when you purchase an upgrade to Business Class or to sleeping accommodations.
-
Charge for First Class on Acela Express: For reservations on Acela Express services, we combine rail fare and First Class upgrade charges into one price.
-
Total Price (with Sleeping Accommodations): The total price for a trip with sleeping accommodations is a combination of Coach Class rail fare (usually the lowest available rail fare) plus the accommodations charge. When two or more passengers share a sleeping car, each passenger must pay a rail fare, but only one accommodations charge applies. In other words, the passengers occupying a sleeping car share the accommodations charge.
-
Charges for Other Accommodations: Other accommodations charges may include charges for bringing your vehicle with you (on the Auto Train), or for bringing a bike with you (where permitted).
