Seating Accommodations

On most Amtrak trains, you have options for seating accommodations. The availability of these options varies depending on your route and the kind of train equipment in use.

Coach Class

Coach class seats are available on all Amtrak trains except Acela Express trains.

On most long-distance trains, we provide extra-spacious Coach Class seating with leg rests designed to enhance your comfort for long or overnight trips.

  • Reserved Coach Seats
Advanced reservations are required for coach travel on all trains that operate with overnight service (for both daytime and overnight travel) and on many shorter distance trains as well.
  • Unreserved Coach Seats
On certain short-distance routes, coach seating is unreserved. Unreserved seats are available to boarding passengers on a first-come, first-served basis.
Superliner Lower Level Coach Seats

Lower Level Coach seats are available on the first level of Superliner trains.

Upgrades
  • Upgrade to Business Class Seats
Business Class is the minimum class of service on Acela Express. Every seat is reserved, with ample legroom and many at-seat amenities. Quiet Cars are available on select routes for travelers who wish to rest and relax without cell phones or loud conversations.
  • Upgrade to First Class Seats
On Acela Express trains, you can enjoy First Class service.
Onboard Upgrade

You can purchase upgrades from Coach Class to First Class and Business Class seats on board your train if unsold space is available. To purchase a seat upgrade, please speak to the Conductor.

On trains with Sleeping Accommodations, you may be able to upgrade to a roomette or bedroom, availability permitting. To purchase a sleeper upgrade, please speak to the Conductor.

Seating Accommodation Policies

Amtrak will monitor seating of passengers to ensure compliance with the following policies:

  • Each passenger paying a fare is entitled to a seat, to the extent coach seats are available.
  • Passengers are entitled to one seat per fare, to ensure other paying passengers are not excluded.
  • Unless specific seats are assigned, seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. On unreserved trains, there are no guaranteed seats.
  • Seating assignments are made without regard to race, color, creed, national origin or gender.
  • Amtrak reserves the right, whenever operating conditions require, to transfer passengers from one car or train to another en route.
