By designing the Professional Development Program, Amtrak develops high potential entry level employees by providing skills and experiences to prepare them for leadership positions, in both business and technical management within Amtrak Corporation.
The Professional Development Program is a 12 to 18 month commitment. Aside from experiencing one of the core focused areas, the program also includes:
Management Associate participants are from college campuses, the Internet, internal job postings, and former Amtrak interns who value diversity and have demonstrated leadership skills, the capacity for outstanding performance and work related training, and academic and community outreach accomplishments.
What we are looking for in a candidate:
Interested candidates must also have a Bachelors Degree in the following areas: Business Administration, Hotel/Hospitality Management, Transportation, Logistics, Industrial Design, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
Engineering trainees will support the planning and directing of the construction, maintenance, and repair of railroad infrastructure.
Concentrated Areas:
Trainees will help plan and schedule improvement and maintenance programs to ensure roadway is properly maintained and in safe operating condition.
Trainees will also identify and test new methods and technology to improve maintenance procedures and extend asset life.
Mechanical trainees will be assigned to the Mechanical Department's Rolling Stock Engineering group. They will receive exposure to rolling stock equipment maintenance, repair and overhaul in various mechanical facilities within Amtrak’s operating divisions and in one or more of its three backshops.
Concentrated Areas:
Trainees will interact with craft employees and supervisors, and may perform supervisory duties as assigned based on assignments.
Trainees will receive training/orientation in equipment standards and compliance requirements including Standard Maintenance Practices (SMP’s), FRA & FDA requirements, quality assurance programs, and other safety and regulatory requirements and programs.
Also, mechanical associates may receive exposure to other departmental functions including but not limited to: fleet management, production planning, Work Management System, material control, budgeting, and project management.
Operations trainees will engage in hands-on training at our National Operations center in Wilmington, DE. During this rotation, emphasis will be placed on a variety of daily functions to include learning and passing examination on the railroad “book of rules” that govern safe train operations across the country.
Concentrated Areas:
During field training, operations trainees will learn how to promote safety, customer service, and on time train operations.
Operations trainees will also have the opportunity to gain management experience. Management tasks will include: supervision of train and engine service crews, performing train makeup, monitoring rules of compliance, responding to service disruptions, handling passenger inconvenience/customer service relationship issues.

At the conclusion of this training, associates will be prepared to accept a field supervisory role on one of Amtrak's operating divisions.
