The Amtrak Downeaster offers five round-trip journeys every day between Boston and Portland. While onboard, passengers enjoy free wireless internet service (technical support not provided).
In Colonial times, Maine shipbuilders created some of the finest sailing vessels ever built, and called them "Downeasters." Today, Amtrak's sleek and sophisticated Downeaster runs between Boston and Portland, Maine with a magical journey along the New England shoreline.
Along the Downeaster route you'll find historic colonial cities, beautiful beaches, world-class shopping, a thriving arts and entertainment scene — and the best lobster and seafood in the world!
Please note that in Boston, Amtrak Downeaster trains arrive and depart from Boston's North Station. All other Amtrak services in Boston depart from South Station and Back Bay Station. Passengers transferring between the Downeaster and other Amtrak services must make their own arrangements for the transfer between stations in Boston. When transferring by taxi it is suggested that passengers connect to their continuing Amtrak train at South Station. Transfer by taxi is recommended for passengers traveling with significant amounts of luggage or young children. We suggest that passengers transferring to Back Bay Station use the Orange Line.
